Westminster Hall, being the chief law courts of England from the 13-19th century, has seen much of our turbulent history, including the removal of Edward the Second and Richard the Second. The magnificent hammerbeam roof was completed in 1402. Its Sussex oak timbers have looked down upon the death sentences pronounced on many famous names, including Thomas More and Charles 1.

Charles spent his last hours in his own commission of the Banqueting House in Whitehall before stepping out onto the scaffold. Built by Inigo Jones in 1619, this remains one the most important buildings in England, the first to be designed purely in the classic Italian tradition.

Common Myths About Wooden Floors

There are loads of myths about wooden floors that put people off but many of the commonly held beliefs are incorrect. Here we bust some of these myths about wood flooring.

They are expensive

While initial installation can be relatively expensive, a wood floor will last a lifetime. Carpets, lino and other flooring will all need replacing within 10 years but a good wood floor can easily last 5-10 times as long as a standard floor. Even in the lifespan of one homeowner wood floors are the better investment.

They are hard to maintain

Wood floors are easy to maintain on a day to day basis. Using a broom to sweep up is often easier than hovering too. If you have pets that malt then you’ll find sweeping your wooden floor far easier than sucking it out of the carpet.

They scratch easily

All floors will get damaged if you hit them hard enough or scrape them hard enough with something. For most floors this is the end of the line and the scratch is permanent, but with a wood floor it is possible to repair scratches. It depletes forests

Wood floors do actually provide warmth aesthetically because of their dark colour and also through effective insulation. Wood is a very good insulator that will help to keep the heat inside your home. Wood has 10 times more insulating capability than a concrete floor, for example.

The strength and resilience of your floor will depend on where it rates on the Janka scale. If you pick the right wood for your home then it will stand up to all you throw at it, including pets and children. For any damage caused there is always the option of wood floor refinishing that will be far more effective than trying to repair the vinyl floor your children have ruined.
